Seeing a need for accessible local news, Andrea and Sylvia launched Porcupine Soup in November 2020 with a goal of reaching 5,000 page views. To their surprise, they ended up hitting 20,000 in the first month, and at the end of June 2023, hit 73,000 unique visitors. Porcupine Soup was recently honored as the Small Business of the Year by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to handling advertising, financials, and her Tracing Your Roots column, Sylvia also has a genealogical/historical research company, North River Research, and is president of the Cairo Historical Society. Andrea, who runs the Porcupine Soup website and newsroom, also serves as vice president of the Cairo Historical Society and serves on the board of the Greene County Economic Development Corporation. In their spare time, Sylvia enjoys traveling and Andrea likes playing 8-ball pool.
Looking ahead, Andrea and Sylvia want to continue to grow their business, increase their coverage area, and hit 100,000 users.
